Summer Reading
Keeping Kids in Books

Summer reading should be as simple as keeping kids in books.  Recently Common Sense Media’s blog posted an article, “How to Raise a Reader: 10 Tips for Getting Your Kids Hooked on Books – ebook or the paper kind.”   While the article is intended to guide families as they build lives as readers, the tips are also great guideposts for summer reading.
Senior Editor, Books, Regan McMahon offers the following:

  1. Read aloud
  2. Savor the series
  3. Grab onto a genre
  4. Feed the favorite-author addiction
  5. Count the classics
  6. Find books about the things your kid loves
  7. Funny is fine
  8. Comics are OK
  9. Engage with eBooks
  10. Make reading a family value

On Wednesday June 18th, Erin Moehring from the Greenwood Branch of the Seattle Public Library will be talking with our readers during our final community meeting of the year.  Ms. Moehring will be introducing SPL’s new summer reading program – Zone in! - a program that will look considerably different in comparison to years past.
In addition to the SPL Summer Reading Program, many local book stores offer summer reading programs and incentives:

Here’s to a great summer filled with adventure.  Thanks for helping to keep our DBE Readers in Books all summer long!

ALO Plan Approved By Advanced Learning Office

Dear Daniel Bagley Communities,
I received approval today from the Advanced Learning office for our Advanced Learning Opportunities plan beginning next school year!  We are officially part of the advanced learning community.  The plan can be viewed on the school district’s Advanced Learning website.  Due to the short time left in this school year, students who scored 95% or higher on the reading or math MAP assessment AND have not been tested by the school district this year will receive the CCSS aligned mathematics assessment as well as the TC reading assessment in early September for recommendation for participation in ALO.  Please know, as it says in the plan, ALO is not a separate classroom but is differentiated strategies in the classroom or a walk to math model in the Contemporary classrooms.  If your child was tested this year AND met the eligibility criteria for Spectrum or APP, you will receive a letter from us this week which will allow you to opt your child into our Advanced Learning model.
This is great news for our students at Daniel Bagley!  Thank you for your continued support of our school!
Erika Ayer
